Description
MEXT Student Life in Japan
Obtaining one of the MEXT scholarships is only the beginning of a series of things that are waiting for you in Japan. The most straightforward part was to apply for the MEXT scholarship. And then, all of a sudden, I found myself in a foreign country with less Japanese knowledge than was comfortable. Consequently, I was trying to integrate at university and in my dormitory, striving to lead an independent life. I have always wanted to be an independent person. However, wanting to be and being are two different things. I depended on others to help me with my paperwork or to get valuable information. But little by little, I started to integrate, to travel by myself, and be more courageous.
In this book, I focus on the everyday life of international students in Japan and draw attention to the most noteworthy aspects. Through this, you can learn more about the life MEXT students experience in Japan, what to expect when you get here, how to be more independent, and how to make the best of it. It will inspire you not only to believe in your dream and that you can accomplish this, but also have a glimpse of what lies ahead.
What to expect from this book?
I am looking forward to sharing with you my experience of living in Japan as a MEXT student. You will find here topics which include money management, finding an apartment, working part-time, relationship with your supervisor, or travelling.
Another paramount aspect that nobody mentions before applying for the MEXT is its extension. Extending your scholarship is a must after your first prep year (undergrad) or after your second year (research). This procedure must happen at the same time as the university, master or PhD admission. I go more in-depth about this topic in the book.
Living in Japan was a captivating and exciting experience, filled with numerous adventures, and appealing life perspectives. Japan is, for all students who are determined to get the MEXT scholarship, a fresh start, a new life, different from anything they’ve lived before. It is a changing experience that makes us more independent; we feel freer and in control of our lives. And best of all, it is an opportunity to make Japanese friends and interact with people from different countries. Japan is a hub for international students.
Being a student here is different from just visiting the country. When we live here, we discover it more profoundly, and we evolve, experience amazing things or contrast, and all these change us. Therefore, it is vital to find out what we want and to develop ourselves.
For whom is this book?
When I started writing this book about the MEXT student life, I intended it as a personal journal. I just wanted to put everything together for my pleasure alone, and I never expected to make it public. However, some of my friends who read it encouraged me to publish it. Their opinion was that this kind of book could be very informative for students who intend to apply for MEXT or who are already in Japan.
By reading this book, you can get an idea of what lies ahead, and maybe you will be able to prepare in advance some things to make your life easier.
